SUMMARY OF PORSCHE SCANNERS
|
Due to both emissions and the increased complication of its vehicles, Porsche need a way to quickly diagnose vehicle problems so a remedy coul be accomplished quickly. The first diagnostic tool that I am aware of was the digital counter for the 944 Turbo. This was so rare I am not including it in my summary. The next tool which was more widely available was the Bosch KTS 300. This was also nicknamed "the hammer". This was due to its shape. Its handle held its rechargable batteries. This is shown below. This particular one has firmware #8.1. It initially came out to diagnose the "round plug" cars or OBD1. This included 911 (964 and 95 993) , 928 and 944. Note the Porsche one is green in cloor and the aftermarket one is grey which is not tailored for Porsche.
At the time of this writing PIWIS 4 is out; but I have not seen it yet. |

The next iteration was the PST2 (Porsche system tester 2). The one pictured is on an IBM T30 frame. This computer had a PC card provision where a card with the Porsche firmware was inserted to convert the data from the data port (either round plug or OBD2 plug) and feed it into the computer with the Porsche software (the latest was version #18). Note in the pictures there is a pigtail from the PC card with an AN connector that will be able to connect to a round plug harness or a OBD2 harness. This computer covers OBD1 and OBD2 through 2004. |

The next iteration is the piwis1 (Porsche integrated workshop system). Instead of having a PC card in the side of the computer, now there a separate module which is called a Bosch kts520 module. Note each input and output cable is about 10 feet in length. This was supposed to cover through the 997 time period. |

Next Porsche came out with the PIWIS 2. This is on a Panasonic toughbook. This is a After the initial actuation click on the icon for piwis. Then enter the work screen. From here click on diagnostics and the model selections will be shown. Note the module has changed again. This is supposed to cover through 991 to 2015. |

The next series is the PIWIS 3. This particular version is on the panasonic lite toughbook series. Turning it in a screen appears where the icon for piwis 3 has to be actuated. This next shows the work screen where you can choose auto identify or manual. A sample is shown of the 911 choices ( This is supposes to cover 2023-2024 models). Finally the new design module is also shown. This particular one is the Porsche version.
